| While conventional farming systems face serious problems of sustainability, organic agriculture is seen as a more environmentally friendly system since it favours renewable resources, recycles nutrients, uses the environment’s own systems for controlling pests and diseases, sustains ecosystems, protects soils, and reduces pollution. At the same time organic farming promotes animal welfare, the use of natural foodstuffs, product diversity and the avoidance of waste, among other practices. However, the future of organic agriculture will depend on its economic viability and on the determination shown by governments to protect these practices. | The flooding situation in 2011 is similar in nature to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1993, but different in the particulars. First, the timing of the flood within the growing season is different. Second, the two floods occurred in different regions, with the 1993 flood affecting a portion of the Corn Belt and the 2011 flood affecting a region farther south. While floodwaters have inundated several million acres of cropland in 2011, yield losses from delayed planting are expected to be limited. Furthermore, the affected states from the current flood are primarily Group 2 states under the current SRA, which are provided with greater reinsurance protection by the government than the Group 1 states. |

| A infecção por Brucella ovis é considerada uma das principais causas de epididimite e infertilidade em carneiros, resultando em falhas reprodutivas e perdas econômicas significativas em rebanhos ovinos ao redor do mundo. O estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar três testes sorológicos disponíveis para o diagnóstico da brucelose ovina por B. ovis, utilizando 181 soros ovinos. Amostras de soro provenientes de carneiros experimentalmente infectados foram coletadas ao longo de 192 dias pós-infecção (n=117) e durante o período pré-infecção (n=9). | As pteridófitas constituem um componente importante da flora tropical, representando aproximadamente 10% do total de plantas vasculares de florestas tropicais, sendo o grupo dominante entre a vegetação herbácea. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar se as comunidades de pteridófitas de duas áreas de Mata Atlântica, Floresta de Restinga (FRS) e Floresta Ombrófila Densa de Terras Baixas (FTB), situadas sobre solos notavelmente distintos e separadas por uma grande rodovia, difeririam em sua composição florística e diversidade. | O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido no Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo, com o objetivo de descrever a estrutura da comunidade microfitoplanctônica, assim como estabelecer sua variação diurna e espacial. As amostras foram coletadas em duas estações (Cabeço da Tartaruga e Enseada) durante cinco dias consecutivos (12 a 16/05/08) do período chuvoso, nos horários da manhã e da tarde, por meio de arrastos horizontais subsuperficiais de 10 minutos de duração, com uma rede de plâncton com abertura de malha de 45 µm. | We present a coupled global climate model (CGCM) simulation, integrated for 1500 yr to quasi-equilibrium, of a stadial (cold period) within Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). The simulated Greenland stadial 12 (GS12; similar to 44 ka BP) annual global mean surface temperature (T-s) is 5.5 degrees C lower than in the simulated recent past (RP) climate and 1.3 degrees C higher than in the simulated Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21 ka BP) climate. The simulated GS12 is evaluated against proxy data and previous modelling studies of MIS3 stadial climate. We show that the simulated MIS 3 climate, and hence conclusions drawn regarding the dynamics of this climate, is highly model-dependent.
